When foof can't find relevant content of the highest priority content type, it looks for relevant content from any other content types that you have enabled. If there is no other relevant content then foof displays photos (if enabled) or nothing.

foof only places a given content type once on a page and places no more than two content types on a page, this is done to provide variety and minimize clutter.

How am I notified of updates to foof?

If your add-on is out of date, a "foof update available" notice will appear on the 728x90 "banner ad" content replacement header. Just click on it and you will be taken to this site.

How do I install foof?

You can install foof by clicking on "download foof" on any page on this site. This is also they way to update to a new version of foof. See installing and using foof. Note that the foof add-on works with FireFox 2.0 - FireFox 3.0.

How do I use foof?

foof is invoked whenever you browse a Web page. foof eliminates all the ads and replaces up to two of them with content, as configured during installation.

When the content is displayed on a Web page, you can click on any of the content types (video, news, blogs, wiki, and pics) shown in the impression's header (see example above) and see other type of content that is related to the page you are browsing. Is foof an add-on or a download, and what's the difference?

foof is an add-on. A FireFox add-on is a module that is added into the browser and integrated with the security and privacy of the browser. A download is typically a program that runs on the desktop and is not limited to the browser's security and privacy models.

Is foof compatible with anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spam software?

We have tested foof with many anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spam products and have found no problems. Please let us know if you encounter any issue.

How is foof related to Adblock Plus?

What about additional languages?

foof is currently available only in English. If other languages are of interest please give us feedback in the forum.

What happens if the contextual servers are not available?

foof is configured to detect the presence of the TextWise servers. If for some reason, they are not available, foof just eliminates the ads instead.

Functionality Questions

How do I disable/Enable foof ?

You either click the green foof menu icon and it will disable foof, or click on the arrow next to the foof icon in the browser toolbar to bring up the menu. Then click on disable (or enable) foof menu item. The icon is gray when foof is disabled and green when foof is enabled.

You can also disable foof selectively for individual pages or sites using the menu.

How do I change the type of content that is displayed?

You click on the arrow next to the foof icon in the browser toolbar to bring up the menu. Then click on "Reconfigure foof". Then select content (see Content Selection).

How do I switch from content display to ad elimination?

You click on the arrow next to the foof icon in the browser toolbar to bring up the menu. Then click on "Reconfigure foof content". Then select "Don't display anything - just block ads". If you don't see "Don't display...", just click the back button to get to the correct configuration page.

Will foof impact page load timing?

foof may cause a slight delay on certain pages due to content loading times. In most of these cases, the load time will not exceed the time that would be required to load the ads that were replaced.

Why am I still seeing some ads?

There are some ads that are a static part of the web page and not easily detectable by ad blockers. These are not removed or replaced. Also, on occasion, the ad will be placed on a background that says "advertisement". This background may appear next to our content replacement. Be assured the content is not an ad.

Why are some ads removed, but not replaced by content?

There are three reasons:

• The is no content available for that size ad.
• The content you requested is not currently available.
• We could not find enough (or any) relevant content for that web page (and we try to not repeat content on the same page).

Why do I sometimes get content that is different from what I chose?

The reason is that there may not have been enough unique (for that page) relevant content of your chosen type for that page. When that happens, we select either other relevant content or nothing.

What content is chosen using relevance?

News, Blog articles, Wikipedia Articles, and YouTube videos are chosen relevantly. Photos are randomly selected. Photos are optionally filtered by the username and tags that you can supply at setup.

How many foof widgets will I see on the page?

The number of foof content widgets on a page is dependant upon many factors. Major factors include the number of ads originally on the page and the number of unique content types selected by the user. There is a maximum of two content widgets per page.

Can I use tags to filter photos, even if I don't have a Flickr screen name?

Yes, just type in the tags. Use commas to separate tags.
